151 – Blakes 7 – The Web

Blake encounters Yeti in the London Underground in the long-lost episode of Blakes 7… no, wait, strike that.  Wrong show.

Blake agrees to wipe out an entire species of living, sentient beings just to save his own hide.  Way to go, hero!

Ben and Eugene discuss.

  1. It wasn’t the Yeti I was expecting in this one – it was the Menoptra and the Zarbi. I’m rapidly developing a theory about the episodes that contain web planets, and quality of the episodes…

Surprised by this as a follow up to Cally’s arrival. I’ll generally give people the benefit of the doubt, but committing sabotage so soon after coming aboard I think even I would be queueing to throw her out of the airlock. It seemed odd how a generally self-serving crew under-reacted to this.

I’m inclined to agree with Ben about the decima constumes… they look a bit Blue Peter to me. And the performances… the lab-smashing scene does not compare favourably to some primary school productions I have sat through. Yes, they’re better than Ewoks, but that’s not exactly setting the bar high, is it? Generally, I’m relieved anytime the action shifts away from the garish sofas of The Chatinator, but in this one, I’d make an exception.

There’s also the magic bracelet problem. Having introduced the magic bracelets as a production convenience, I spent too much time wondering why, if Blake was unhappy at the power packs being brought down on to the planet, he didn’t just beam back up with them straight away. It would have been far more effective than his, er, daring plan of burying them under a few pine-needles, and he could have magicked straight back down again to play hard-ball in his negotiations with the what-nots.

And what sense did Geela speaking with Saymon’s voice make, if all her words were his anyway?
